Without the Hateful Rhetoric

Redirecting the Circular Firing Squad

Refreshing Public School Experience

Updated: May 22, 2023

Last Thursday evening Barbara and I attended a choir concert at a local charter school. We have friends whose children attend.

The concert was primarily the combined middle school and high school choir, followed by the show choir. The choir director introduced the group and announced that they would be singing a 35-minute medley of songs of America.

I was blown away. The medley was capped on both ends by Lee Greenwood’s Proud to be an American. In between there were all sorts of songs, from old classics to historic negro spirituals to the four military fight songs. Flags were presented multiple times and the veterans in the audience were recognized. When they finished, all I could do was turn to our friends and say, “How refreshing!” Also impressive was the fact that the young people sang for 35 minutes without referring to sheet music.

The show choir sang and danced, presenting four songs, one of which was in an African language and English. That one was a Christian song.

The experience gave me hope that some public schools still get it right. The James Irwin Charter School of Colorado Springs certainly does. I was happy to learn that this school has grown and continues to grow to multiple campuses.

It is nice to see that some schools still teach old fashion American values. I pray that there are many more out there.
